Tim Brown, a Public Speaking Practitioner, has more than 40 years of distinguished public speaking experience.
He empowers speakers with practical wisdom originating from his “Visual Speaking” content and delivery style.
He uncovered “Visual Speaking” as he prepared and delivered presentations to audiences ranging in size from 10 to 10,000.
Tim’s Experience Improves Audience Attention
Tim equips clients with techniques he discovered out of a determination to creatively sustain audience attention throughout a presentation, no matter the occasion.
Each technique was developed by using certain skills to achieve certain results with audiences similarly situated in the following categories: Competition, Leadership, Ambassador, Instruction, and Inspiration.
The substantial skill practice throughout his extensive experience allows him to not only instruct a client what to do, but also demonstrate how to do it.
Fearlessly Captures Audience Attention
Tim’s ability to grab and hold audience attention is deeply entrenched. It surfaced at a young age, when drawn to the thrill of being on stage and performing in front of crowds. Whether performing roles in dramatic productions or singing solos in choral groups, Tim thrived under the spotlight and used every opportunity to get an energetic response from the audience.
His fearless ability to capture audience attention flourished throughout his Competitive Speaking experience. Tim’s intense desire to win sharpened his engagement with the audience, so much so, that he frequently advanced beyond elimination rounds and defeated opponents in higher levels of competition. As a law school student, he became National Moot Court Team Captain by winning the Best Oralist Award during intramural competition.
Tim emphasizes the need to fearlessly confront and compete against audience distractions. A competitive mindset does not surrender to an audience member’s occasional diversion. A speaker, who desires to win attention, fights to regain attention. To battle internal and external distractions, a competitive speaker uses Visual Content and Visual Delivery techniques to pull audience members into an active interpretation of what is not only heard but also seen.
Motivates Audience with Emotional Connection
Tim’s Competitive Speaking prepared him to fearlessly pursue leadership opportunities. Undeterred by seemingly unreachable leadership positions, he confidently entered those campaigns. He distinguished his candidacy by delivering emotionally-charged messages, inspiring members to share his passion. Consequently, Tim won his campaigns decisively and served, with distinction, in state, national, and university-wide positions.
Tim’s aptitude for communicating emotions made him a valuable member of highly visible leadership teams. He was regularly called upon to address members and persuade their increased support of current programs and new initiatives. To do so, he designed messages, with meaning felt by a synergy of his facial expressions and his hand gestures with his vocal variety. The emotional memory of those speeches ignited and energized membership involvement long after the presentation.
Tim effectively prepares speakers to genuinely achieve an emotional connection with their audiences. Without a plan to arouse an emotional response, the audience is likely to walk away with unfavorable sentiments. Tim guides speakers to identify the desired emotional response and to select the appropriate content to ignite such a response. Speakers are then coached to confidently and skillfully dramatize such material so the audience feels the sight and sound of the words being delivered.
Seizes Moment with Message Clarity
Tim was chosen as Ambassador for national groups because of his foremost audience connection skills. Organization executives noticed Tim’s consistently exceptional performance, while presiding over state, regional, and national leadership conferences or delivering keynote speeches at annual celebrations or conducting seminars at local chapter events. They sought Tim to promote their organizations at highly significant events and, consistent with his reputation, to successfully persuade audiences to increase their participation.
Tim’s Ambassador Speaking skillfully energized audiences, creating an atmosphere for effective persuasion. Concerned for limited time to make a lasting impact, Tim immediately grabbed audience attention with, for example: entertaining exchanges with celebrities; ice-breaking chants and cheers with attendees; dynamic opening remarks to business and government leaders. A clear and concise persuasive message would follow, in the attention overflow, so that the message would be fully received, not just delivered.
Tim improves pursuit of new business by seizing complete attention during sales pitch delivery. As a sales representative, Tim easily initiated contact with business prospects. His sales pitches ultimately increased sales for companies in varied industries: chemical production, employment placement, litigation support, and financial investments. He persuaded prospects to complete the desired action with language strategically designed to maintain attention while illustrating the benefits of taking such action.
Engages Audience with Activity-Based Learning
Tim expanded his audience engagement expertise by instructing college students. While he enjoyed the ease of interacting one-to-one with a client or prospect during a sales call, he yearned to sharpen his group interaction skills. To do so, he began conducting dozens of leadership workshops for groups he once served as an elected officer. Upon realizing his gift for engaging learners, Tim became a college adjunct professor of Public Speaking and Africana Studies, instructing 42 semester courses, with an average of 17 students per course.
Tim engages learners with instructional activities designed to educate, while doing and reflecting. As a speaking skills trainer for corporate executives and union members, Tim designed and facilitated activity-based group training programs. The format fully engaged adult learners, with at least 75% of its timeline devoted to both completing the activity and reflecting on the lessons gained. College students were more attentive with this format, particularly since the class lecture was limited to simply setting the stage for their individual discoveries.
Tim equips instructors with tools and techniques to enhance student engagement. In a quest to engage “all the students, all the time,” Tim emphasizes practicing delivery, immediately after a blueprint is used to quickly organize content. Otherwise, very little time (if any) is spent on developing the skills to compete against student distractions, especially when one is unfamiliar with pre-designed course materials. Tim directs instructors to stand and naturally move their body and voice in a manner that attracts, not distracts, attention.
Customizes Messages with Storytelling
Tim facilitated a clear understanding of abstract concepts by guiding students to discover living examples. For instance, when instructing a course broadly addressing Race and Poverty issues, Tim supplemented readings and lectures with a journal writing project. During daily routines, students recorded incidents in which they encountered Race and Poverty elements. Without fail, this process dramatically enhanced students’ understanding because what was once a vague concept came alive as personal stories.
Tim, influenced by a culture of inspiration, translates a thought or idea into words illustrating human stories. His law school and seminary training established a practice for applying legal and biblical text to real life scenarios. While initially used to illustrate certain practical results for legal clients, he eventually focused this skill on drawing optimistic outcomes for church congregants. As he engaged actual stories of daily living, he inspired further living by using words to visualize a continuing story of hopeful living.
Tim refines a speaker’s preparation by emphasizing inclusion of Storytelling to improve audience comprehension. Tim recognizes Storytelling as a visual art form. When speakers draw mental pictures with words, they empower audience members to discover and fully understand their individual messages. That’s why his preparation blueprint, used to organize presentations, directs speakers to include Visual Content. By doing so, speakers increase the odds that an audience will actively listen, understand, and remember the message.
